“Then wait a moment, I’ll tidy up a room for you,” Lin Wei replied after a brief pause.
On the other end of the line, Huo Qijun responded with a tone that dripped with frustration: “Can’t you just… directly bring me to your room?!”
Having already spent a night on the same bed, he wouldn’t refuse! If he was going to refuse, he should have done so when Lin Wei offered him to stay last night! Foolish!
Lin Wei, pretending to be clueless but failing miserably, was amused by Huo Qijun’s implied words, not quite sure where Huo’s supreme confidence came from.
“As long as you don’t regret it!” After thinking for a moment, he agreed. Given Huo Qijun’s reaction earlier that day, sharing a bed again would undoubtedly feel different from last night.
“I won’t!” Huo Qijun urged him, “Hurry up and come over!”
“Okay.”
Lin Wei hung up and walked next door. As he entered, he raised his head and saw Huo Qijun coming down the stairs with a bag. He almost stumbled on the step but quickly grabbed the railing to steady himself upon seeing Lin Wei.
“If you’re having such a hard time, maybe we should just live apart for a while?” Lin Wei suggested sincerely, arms crossed.
Huo Qijun felt embarrassed, his ears turning red, but he stubbornly said, “What am I having a hard time with? I just lost my balance!”
“Be careful on the stairs!” Lin Wei shook his head and stepped forward to take the things from Huo Qijun’s hands. He sighed as he looked at the stiff young master whose gaze was adrift, not knowing where to land. “Is there anything else?”
“Um, there’s a smaller one left, on the bed.” Huo Qijun felt a bit lightheaded.
He truly didn’t understand the difference between today and yesterday; why, in front of Lin Wei, he suddenly became so sensitive, even mindful of his breathing, as if any noise might be too much. He was also anxious about his racing heart; standing too close made him worry Lin Wei could hear it.
Liking a friend, and having a potential boyfriend—how could the difference be so vast…
Before he could further ponder this imbalance, Lin Wei flicked his forehead to snap him out of his daze, breaking his involuntary trance. “Then let’s go get it.”
“Oh!” Huo Qijun felt a bit choked by Lin Wei’s lack of romantic gesture, but he moved more naturally after that, turning to fetch the last bit of his things.
While organizing his belongings in Lin Wei’s bedroom, Huo Qijun looked at the wardrobe he had occupied halfway and the bed, feeling a sudden wave of complex emotions—a mix of stability and anxiety. Yet, he didn’t feel panic; when his gaze fell on Lin Wei, the inexplicable sadness vanished instantly.
“What are you staring at?” Lin Wei, who was putting away Huo Qijun’s things, noticed his unmoving gaze on his face and asked with genuine curiosity.
“Nothing,” Huo Qijun naturally refused to admit his recent realization.
He had always known Lin Wei was handsome; no matter if it was Fu Xiaoqing or Fang Yueyue, any woman who had met Lin Wei couldn’t help but compliment his looks.
But just now, the acknowledgment that Lin Wei was good-looking seemed to have solidified in his mind for the first time, making it difficult for him to look away.
Then, suddenly realizing that this was currently his… boyfriend, what’s wrong with looking for a while? Even if he stared all day, there was no need to feel guilty!
So he became more assertive and asked, “Can’t I look?”
“I’m just trying to spare you the awkwardness. I don’t know who was frantic to find an excuse to dodge me this afternoon,” Lin Wei teased him with a smile.
Huo Qijun’s anger flared up, and he grabbed a pillow from the bed to throw it at Lin Wei, but Lin Wei seemed to have predicted his move, catching it mid-air and tossing it back softly.
“Who’s feeling awkward! I genuinely had something to do this afternoon!” Although he had indeed fled in a panic, he had also occupied himself with the task of altering the rings Lin Wei helped him get back from the charity gala into two men’s rings.
He was excited while doing that, never considering what would happen if he and Lin Wei didn’t end up together; but when he finally held the finished rings, his adrenaline cooled, and he realized he had skipped too many steps—he couldn’t give those rings away now.
“There’s nothing I can’t tell you,” he added quickly.
It sounded like he was desperately trying to find an excuse, and even that wasn’t good, but luckily for him, Lin Wei was always good about stopping short of pushing him too hard, never making him feel truly exposed.
“If you don’t want to tell me, then you don’t have to,” Lin Wei reassured him.
“You’re so generous!” Unfortunately, Huo Qijun wasn’t very touched; while Lin Wei’s tact was absolutely the most comfortable quality when just friends, it felt slightly indifferent as lovers.
Lin Wei almost laughed at Huo Qijun’s insensitivity; having tidied up most things, he turned to ask, “Have you eaten dinner?”
“I have.” He had snacked a little while waiting for the rings, and when he returned, it was already dark: “You weren’t waiting for me to come back and not eat, were you?”
“You wish!” Lin Wei chuckled lightly, then said, “Do whatever you like; I have nothing else!”
After that, the room fell silent for at least ten breaths.
“Is there nothing else you want to talk to me about except telling me to eat properly?” Huo Qijun narrowed his eyes at him.
Lin Wei touched his nose and said good-naturedly, “Then what do you want to talk about?”
“…” Huo Qijun was momentarily at a loss.
The two of them stood in the room, one sitting on the bed and the other leaning against the wardrobe, after several seconds of mutual silence, Lin Wei finally found a topic, “I’m going to see Yu Yu tomorrow, just wanted to let you know; you… should play dumb about it so he won’t be startled.”
“Hmm.” Huo Qijun responded indifferently. He had no opinion about Yu Yu anymore; whatever happened, happened—he wasn’t too concerned.
He was more preoccupied with the fact that, after their relationship changed, it seemed he was losing the rhythm of their usual interactions.
No, that’s not right, Huo Qijun corrected himself; Lin Wei was clearly still acting the same. It was his issue; his desires had shifted. What he expected from Lin Wei was different now than it had been when they were just friends. However, Lin Wei was too good at enduring, and he thought that to break this awkward scenario, he should give Lin Wei some stimulation!
